Uche Sparks Dominant Crystal Palace Victory at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever continental campaign, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting at a rapid pace. Without star figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a commanding result that all but guarantees them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further three points in their next fixture against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to seal straight passage to the last 16, especially following a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Moment
This match provided a platform for some of Palace's fringe players to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning since arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a well-taken goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
A Shelbourne side that had finished their league season proved outmatched against a mostly second-string Palace outfit. The visitors were already weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg injuries.
Control Established from the Outset
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the referee waved away the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal man didn't need to wait long to get his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's shot had hit the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for two agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Game
The match was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring with his very first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then missed a glaring chance, indicating there is still scope for development in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his senior debut, capping an otherwise positive night for the visiting side.
