In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to enjoy the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
