2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Transition Comes After Poor Feedback
Brinkman takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' disappointing initial reveal last fall.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer informed employees about this organizational change through an official communication, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the requirement for a distinct vision.
Ismailer noted that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a renewed approach, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
Trend of Key Recruitment
This announcement follows a comparable move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the full message from Ismailer's memo:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative designers we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to continue.”
With your dedication and flexibility, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s the game demo was informative. It confirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It revealed the requirement for a sharper brand.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the criticism to mind and revamped Project ETHOS with a refreshed direction - one that’s poised to deliver on its ambition to our players.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS increases every day. To advance the incredible development you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Director of 31st Union. Following several months of conversations, Ben starts with us on the specified date.
His guidance and expertise in the PVP shooter field is considerable, having devoted the last 15 years producing and managing some of the most recognizable titles in the industry, such as the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in receiving him in the coming days. We are all excited to persist witnessing the development of the game in the months to follow.
David
Experience of the Incoming Leader
Brinkman currently serves in the position of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in multiple production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at other industry leaders.
Game Details and Vision
The upcoming game was unveiled in October 2024 alongside a early access event. At the time, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative evolution on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch states. "Take on the opponents with new abilities, risks, and tests that shift every session. Do you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively aim high, gamble everything, and hope your team can achieve the highest spot? The option is yours."
Project Ethos does not have an official release date or consoles, but fans can anticipate further news as development continues.
