The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, is known as a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Munich was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading forwards. According to reports, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a significant boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when the club seem to be building momentum.
Their recent performances include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought additional activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a club official commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
